Resients of Danyame and Nhyiaeso in Kumasi are crying out over a wave of night-time robberies following months of non-functioning streetlights along the road linking the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC).
The affected stretch, once a busy route for traders and commuters, has now become a robbery hotspot, forcing many residents to stay indoors after dark.
Patience Mensah, a trader and resident, said the fear of attacks has changed daily routines in the community.
“When it’s 6 p.m., you can’t walk around. We have to close our shops early to stay safe,” she lamented.
According to residents, several cases of theft and armed robbery have occurred in recent weeks, but no permanent solution has been provided. The streetlights, they say, have been off for months, plunging the area into total darkness at night.
Responding to the concerns, Henrietta Afia Konadu, Public Relations Officer of the KMA, acknowledged the situation and assured residents that steps are being taken to restore lighting along the road.
“We’re aware the area is dark and unsafe. Our major challenge has been cable theft by robbers, which disrupts power supply to the streetlights. Authorities are now rethinking a sustainable solution,” she explained.
Madam Konadu also advised residents to avoid using the stretch at night and instead stick to principal routes until the issue is resolved.
The KMA says it is working with law enforcement and power authorities to restore the lights and improve security in the affected areas.
