Captain Smart, an outspoken critic of government and politicians in both power and opposition, has come out in favor of his one-time rival, John Dramani Mahama, who also happened to be the President at the time.
His current popularity stems from his cancellation of the allowances for Teacher Trainees and Nursing Trainees, which had been abolished by the then-President, John Dramani Mahama.
The cancellation of these allowances granted to students undertaking nursing and teaching training at colleges was originally intended to decrease the economic effect, due to the large sums paid to them as allowances and the toll it was taking on the economy at the time.
The decision drew a barrage of criticism from the opposition, who pledged to resume, and then did, payment of trainee allowances if they won power. According to Captain Smart, this endeavor has struck rock bottom and is unsustainable.
Furthermore, he (Captain Smart) recalls vehemently stating that it would not work, but he and what he was saying received little attention.
Captain Smart is quoted as declaring that canceling the stipend for both teacher and nursing trainees was the greatest thing for the country. He went on to say that he was delighted that Mahama had done so.
