In celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child, 20-year-old Jane Muya from Uganda’s Adjumani District took over as the British High Commissioner to Uganda for a day under Plan International’s Girls’ Takeover initiative.

Once a teen mother at 15, Muya has transformed her life into a story of strength and purpose. She now mentors 35 young mothers in her community through safe spaces that provide emotional support, parenting guidance, and life skills.

“Today I take on this role not just for myself, but for all the girls whose dreams were interrupted. My story shows that girls can be future leaders,” she said during her address.

The event, hosted by British High Commissioner Lisa Chesney MBE, reflected this year’s theme, “Skilling and Expanding Economic Opportunities for Girls.” Chesney praised Muya’s determination, describing her as an inspiration to girls everywhere.

Plan International Uganda’s Country Director, Phoebe Kasoga, said Muya’s journey highlights both the struggles girls face and the opportunities that arise when they are empowered.

As the world marks the International Day of the Girl Child, Jane Muya’s message stands clear: girls are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they are ready to lead today.
