President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s newly appointed Hajj Board to overhaul the country’s pilgrimage management system by embracing full digitisation, arguing that modernising the process is the only way to meet the rising demand from prospective pilgrims.

At the inauguration ceremony on Friday, November 14, the President said a digital-first approach would eliminate long queues, reduce human interference, and help curb fraudulent practices that have plagued Hajj registration in previous years.

The Board, now under the leadership of Alhaji Ibrahim Tanko, includes Administrator Shaibu Mahama and members Dr Abdul-Samed Tanko, Alimatu Issahak, Alhaji Amadu Tanko, Alhaji Masaud Abubakar, and Chief Ahmed Ibrahim.

President Mahama urged the team to focus on efficiency and professionalism, stressing that the expectations of Ghanaian Muslims continue to rise each year.

He recommended the introduction of secure digital systems such as online registration, automated notifications, and a dedicated Hajj mobile app that would allow pilgrims to manage their entire journey, from application and payments to travel updates, without unnecessary delays.

The President further directed the Board to prepare a comprehensive post-Hajj report for the Office of the Chief of Staff every year. The document must detail expenditures, safety protocols, logistical arrangements, and any emerging challenges to ensure transparency and accountability.
