Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has debunked reports suggesting that the United States intends to deport a Salvadorian national, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, to Ghana.
The reports, which surfaced on several international media platforms on Friday, October 10, 2025, claimed that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had notified Abrego Garcia’s legal representatives of plans to deport him to Ghana after earlier considering Eswatini and Uganda as possible destinations.
Reacting to the news in a Facebook post, Mr. Ablakwa described the reports as false and misleading, stressing that Ghana has not agreed to receive Abrego Garcia and has already made its stance clear to U.S. authorities.
He explained that Ghana’s limited understanding with the U.S. on migration matters only covers non-criminal West African nationals, and that such arrangements are based strictly on humanitarian and solidarity principles.
“In my interactions with U.S. officials, I made clear that our understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans, purely on the grounds of African solidarity and humanitarian principles, would not be expanded,” Mr. Ablakwa clarified.
He further emphasized that Ghana objects strongly to the circulation of what he called “misleading media reports,” reiterating that no agreement or consideration exists for the deportation of Abrego Garcia to Ghana.
