Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has arrived in Latvia for a two-day working visit focused on investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia, a case he has described as troubling and shrouded in uncertainty.
In a Facebook update, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that Latvia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Baiba Braže, has pledged her country’s full cooperation to ensure that the truth is established and justice is served.
According to the Minister, the trip is in fulfilment of a commitment he made to Ghanaians to personally pursue the matter. He is heading a six-member delegation made up of senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as a forensic specialist and a pathologist to support the investigative process.
Mr. Ablakwa also provided an update on the involvement of the family, explaining that two relatives of the deceased were unable to travel with the delegation on Saturday night due to delays in their visa processing. He confirmed that the visas were issued on Sunday, and the family members are expected to depart later that night and join the team on Monday morning.
Addressing reports circulating on social media, the Minister stressed that all family members and technical experts attached to the delegation are being fully sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He rejected claims of extortion and the issuance of fake tickets, describing them as false and misleading.
During the visit, the delegation is scheduled to hold crucial meetings on Monday with officials from Latvia’s Ministries of Interior and Education, as well as investigators directly involved in the case. The mission, Mr. Ablakwa noted, is aimed at shedding light on the events leading to Nana Agyei Ahyia’s death and helping his family find answers and closure.
