Former Lands Minister and Damongo MP, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has called on government to immediately halt what he describes as an “unconstitutional” agreement to receive deported West African nationals from the United States.

Speaking on behalf of the Minority in Parliament, Mr. Jinapor argued that the arrangement undermines Ghana’s legal framework and foreign policy, stressing that it has not been subjected to parliamentary scrutiny or ratification.

He cautioned that the deal could damage Ghana’s international reputation, aligning the country with U.S. immigration policies that have been widely criticised as harsh and discriminatory. He also noted that the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement only covers voluntary regional travel and cannot be used to justify forced deportations.

The MP warned that Ghana risks being perceived as complicit in human rights violations and straining ties with African partners. He therefore demanded a suspension of the deal until Parliament has debated and approved it, insisting that government must also disclose the legal, diplomatic, and security safeguards tied to the arrangement.
