The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has uncovered a suspected network producing and distributing counterfeit marriage certificates to members of the public.
The fraudulent scheme came to light after a client’s marriage certificate, allegedly obtained through the syndicate, was rejected by a foreign embassy during a visa application due to discrepancies. The issue was reported to the AMA, triggering internal investigations.
Confirming the discovery, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at AMA, said the Assembly has launched a formal investigation and referred the case to the Ghana Police Service for further action.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspects had been posing as AMA officials responsible for marriage registrations while forging official certificates.
“The Assembly detected these fraudulent activities and immediately handed the matter over to the Police for a thorough investigation,” Mr. Ankrah stated.
He also urged the public to use only the official AMA Marriage Registry for registration services and to avoid intermediaries or unofficial agents to prevent falling victim to such scams.
