The stage is set for two mouthwatering semi-final encounters at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco and Senegal emerged from a fiercely contested quarter-final round.
Hosts Morocco will take on a confident Nigeria side packed with attacking talent, while Senegal face seven-time champions Egypt in another high-stakes showdown. Both semi-final matches are scheduled for Wednesday, January 21.
Egypt sealed the final place in the last four with a dramatic 3–2 victory over defending champions Côte d’Ivoire, ending the Elephants’ title defence in a thrilling contest that went down to the wire. After the match, the Pharaohs’ camp described the win as “a test of character and belief,” insisting the team had shown it was ready for the pressure of the knockout stage.
Senegal had earlier booked their semi-final ticket with a hard-fought 1–0 win over Mali in an intense West African derby. Iliman Ndiaye’s first-half strike proved decisive, with the Teranga Lions later saying they had to “suffer together and stay disciplined” to protect the narrow lead.
Morocco continued their impressive home run with a controlled 2–0 victory over Cameroon in Rabat. Goals from Brahim Diaz and Ismaël Saibari underlined the Atlas Lions’ balance going forward and at the back, as they kept alive hopes of winning a first AFCON title in nearly 50 years. Members of the Moroccan camp said the team is “focused, united and playing for the nation,” as expectations continue to rise.
Nigeria completed the semi-final line-up with a solid 2–0 win over Algeria in Marrakech. Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock after a tight opening period before Akor Adams wrapped up the result late on. The Super Eagles described the performance as “professional and mature,” as they prepare for a daunting test against the tournament hosts.
With four of Africa’s most successful football nations left standing, the semi-finals promise high quality, tension and drama as the race for continental glory intensifies.
