The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi North in the Ahafo Region, Hafiz Dauda, has expressed strong confidence that the Mahama-led government will establish public universities in the Ahafo Region before the end of its tenure.
Mr. Dauda made the remarks during a visit by the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, who toured the region at the invitation of the Ahafo Regional Minister, Charity Gardiner.
The visit formed part of efforts to inspect and assess facilities earmarked for tertiary institutions at Akrodie, Mim, Kenyasi No. 1, and Kenyasi No. 2, as the region continues to push for the establishment of its own public universities.
Speaking to Adom News, the Asutifi North DCE said the people of Ahafo have already shown remarkable commitment by using community development funds to put up structures for the proposed universities, demonstrating the region’s readiness to host higher educational institutions that can propel local development.
“Our chiefs and people have gone beyond words; they have invested their own resources to put up quality infrastructure for these projects. Except for the one at Akrodie, which is being constructed by the government, all the others were initiated by the communities themselves,” Mr. Dauda said.
He added that with such visible efforts from traditional leaders and residents, he is optimistic that President Mahama’s administration will not overlook Ahafo’s determination to advance education and create opportunities for the youth.
Meanwhile, the Akwamuhene of Kenyasi No. 2, Nana Amponsah Boadu Ayeboafo, and the Acting President of the Akrodie Traditional Area, Nana Darko Kuffour, commended the Regional Minister for facilitating the GTEC Director-General’s working visit.
They expressed hope that the inspection would expedite government approval and accreditation processes, leading to the swift establishment of public universities in the region.
The traditional leaders emphasized that the people of Ahafo have already made significant financial and infrastructural commitments and therefore deserve access to tertiary education within the region to promote socio-economic growth and reduce migration of young people to other parts of the country.
