The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has urged the Speaker of Parliament to suspend the vetting of Chief Justice-designate, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, until all legal proceedings concerning the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo are fully resolved.
According to Mr. Ahiagbah, proceeding with the vetting amid ongoing court disputes could undermine public confidence in both the judiciary and Parliament’s oversight process. He therefore appealed for restraint and consensus in handling what he described as “a sensitive constitutional transition.”
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, November 1, the NPP Communications Director said the Speaker’s leadership was crucial in maintaining calm and order while the legal matters run their course.
“The Speaker is a seasoned parliamentarian and a respected statesman,” Ahiagbah noted. “In this moment, he should guide the House to wait for the court to conclude its work. There is no need for haste.”
He warned that rushing the process could deepen political tension and create what he called “a bad precedent for future judicial appointments.”
Mr. Ahiagbah’s remarks echo earlier calls by the Minority in Parliament, which has also asked for a temporary freeze on the vetting process until clarity is provided on Justice Torkonoo’s removal from office.
The debate over the Chief Justice nomination has intensified in recent weeks, with constitutional lawyers and governance observers urging Parliament to strike a balance between respecting due process and ensuring the continuity of judicial leadership.
