A massive show of civic responsibility marked the February 2026 National Sanitation Day at Akosua Village, as residents turned out in their numbers to participate in a community-wide clean-up exercise organized by the Effutu Municipal Assembly.
The exercise, held under clear morning skies and charged with renewed community spirit, saw men, women, and youth working side by side with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), staff of the Assembly, opinion leaders, and sanitation officers. The coordinated effort focused on clearing choked gutters, desilting drainage systems, cutting overgrown weeds along the banks of the lagoon, and sweeping major streets and hidden corners of the community.
By mid-morning, heaps of refuse had been gathered for disposal, gutters that had long been blocked were flowing freely, and previously overgrown sections near the lagoon had been restored to visibility, a sight many residents described as both refreshing and inspiring.
Addressing participants after the exercise, the Municipal Chief Executive, Rev. Atta Mensah, commended the community for what he described as an “extraordinary demonstration of unity and responsibility.”
“This turnout speaks volumes about the consciousness of our people,” he said. “Sanitation is not a one-day ritual. It is a lifestyle, a discipline, and a shared duty. Today, Akosua Village has shown that development begins with clean surroundings.”
Rev. Mensah emphasized that the municipality’s sanitation success in 2025. when it was recognized as one of the cleanest assemblies in the Central Region, was not accidental but the result of consistent community participation and strong collaboration between residents and the Assembly.
“We attained a remarkable sanitation milestone in 2025,” he noted. “But maintaining the title of the cleanest Assembly spot in the Region requires sustained effort. Cleanliness must become part of our identity, not just an event on the calendar.”
He further highlighted the public health implications of poor sanitation, warning that choked gutters and stagnant water create breeding grounds for mosquitoes and increase the risk of preventable diseases. He urged residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse and to make proper use of designated waste disposal facilities.
The MCE also reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to strengthening sanitation enforcement, improving waste management infrastructure, and intensifying public education campaigns across communities within the municipality.
Community leaders present at the event praised the Assembly for its hands-on leadership approach, noting that the active participation of the MCE and his staff boosted morale and encouraged greater involvement from residents.
For many participants, the exercise was more than a clean-up campaign. It was a reaffirmation of collective responsibility and civic pride. Young volunteers expressed optimism that the renewed sanitation drive would inspire behavioural change, particularly among the youth.
As the event drew to a close, the once-littered gutters and overgrown paths stood transformed, tangible evidence of what communal effort can achieve. The February 2026 National Sanitation Day held on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Akosua Village not only improved the physical environment but also reinforced a powerful message: sustainable development begins at the grassroots, with every citizen playing a part.
With momentum building, the Effutu Municipality appears poised to consolidate its sanitation gains and set an even higher benchmark for environmental cleanliness in the region and beyond.
