Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has joined the chorus of tributes pouring in for Kenya’s late opposition leader and former Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away in India on Tuesday.

In an emotional post on Facebook, the former Ghanaian leader expressed deep sorrow over Mr. Odinga’s death, describing him as “a great son of Africa” and “a true friend” whose legacy would continue to inspire the continent.

Mr. Akufo-Addo recounted his long friendship with the Kenyan statesman, noting that they shared a deep passion for democracy, good governance, and the promotion of human rights across Africa.

He recalled Mr. Odinga’s presence at his 2017 presidential inauguration in Accra, calling him “one of the distinguished African leaders who honoured Ghana with their presence.”

The former president also mentioned Ghana’s strong backing for Mr. Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission Chairmanship in 2024, describing him as a visionary who worked tirelessly for continental unity and progress.

“As a founding member of the African Union, I pledged Ghana’s support when President Ruto visited to seek our endorsement of Prime Minister Odinga’s candidacy. Indeed, Raila himself visited me in November 2024 as part of his campaign,” Mr. Akufo-Addo said.

He added that Mr. Odinga’s political courage and unwavering commitment to Kenya’s democratic journey would forever remain a beacon for generations of African leaders.

“His remarkable footprints on Kenya’s stability, democracy, and history will never be forgotten. He will be sorely missed,” Akufo-Addo stated.

Mr. Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics for decades, was celebrated across Africa for his fight for multiparty democracy and social justice.
