The River Owura, a tributary of the Birim River, is showing signs of recovery following a recent anti-galamsey operation by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).

According to a monitoring update shared by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, a follow-up inspection conducted by the NAIMOS monitoring team revealed a remarkable improvement in water clarity and reduced turbidity levels.

The team revisited Akyem Wenchi and surrounding areas, including Abesim near Akyem Akropong, one week after the targeted raid that dismantled several illegal mining setups. The latest findings indicate that there has been no resumption of illegal mining activity since the operation.

“This period of respite has allowed the river to begin its natural recovery,” the Ministry noted in a Facebook post, describing the outcome as a significant victory for the environment and local communities.

Officials emphasized that the visible improvement in River Owura’s condition underscores the effectiveness of sustained enforcement and monitoring in the ongoing fight against illegal mining.

“The commitment of the NAIMOS team remains unwavering,” the Ministry added, reaffirming its resolve to restore Ghana’s polluted water bodies and safeguard natural ecosystems.

The operation forms part of the government’s broader strategy to combat illegal mining and advance sustainable environmental stewardship across the country.
