Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, has officially rebranded his political movement, the Movement for Change, into a new political entity known as the United Party (UP).
The announcement was made at a brief but symbolic ceremony in Accra on Thursday, signalling what Mr. Kyerematen described as a new chapter in Ghana’s political history, one that seeks to break the duopoly of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to Mr. Kyerematen, the United Party aims to transform Ghana into the economic powerhouse of Africa by the year 2040, anchored on innovation, inclusive development, and strong governance structures.
“The United Party is not just a rebranding exercise; it represents a renewed vision and commitment to transformational leadership that puts Ghana first,” he stated.
Mr. Kyerematen, who resigned from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in September 2023, cited unfair treatment and deep internal divisions as key reasons for his departure. Shortly after his exit, he launched the Movement for Change, symbolised by the butterfly, which promoted unity, discipline, and forward-thinking leadership.
The transition from the Movement for Change to the United Party, he explained, forms part of a broader political strategy to consolidate support and build a stronger national platform capable of contesting for power in the 2028 general elections.
Political analysts say the move could reshape Ghana’s political landscape, especially as disillusionment grows among sections of the electorate seeking an alternative to the two dominant parties.
Mr. Kyerematen concluded his address with a call for all Ghanaians, irrespective of political, ethnic, or religious affiliation, to join the United Party in pursuing what he termed “a new national consensus for progress and prosperity.”
