Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has dismissed the newly rebranded United Party (UP) led by Alan Kyerematen, describing it as “dead on arrival” and unworthy of the NPP’s attention.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Kukurantumi show, Nana Obiri Boahen said any attempt by the NPP to take legal action against the group would be unnecessary and counterproductive.
“I wouldn’t advise any member of the NPP to go to court over this. We shouldn’t tolerate them because it will only make them feel important. What hasn’t happened before?” he questioned.
His comments come after the Member of Parliament for Walewale, Kabiru Tia, revealed that the NPP was considering legal action over the use of the “United Party” name, a name that carries significant weight in Ghana’s political history.
But Mr. Obiri Boahen believes such an approach would be misguided and a waste of the party’s energy.
“Why go to court over this? The United Party is dead on arrival,” he stated, urging the NPP to focus instead on pressing national issues rather than what he termed “a yellow T-shirt movement.”
He further argued that engaging in public exchanges with a group lacking political credibility would not serve the NPP’s interests.
“Any serious politician, intellectual, or academician will tell you to ignore them. Even Cheddar’s movement performed better in the 2024 elections,” he remarked.
The seasoned politician urged the NPP leadership to take inspiration from past stalwarts such as B.J. Da Rocha and Appiah Minkah, who exhibited restraint and maturity in their political dealings.
“We need to be serious in this country. There are pressing issues like galamsey still hanging on our necks. No serious-minded person should give credence to this issue,” he concluded
