Legal educationist and former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Dr. Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has called on Andy Appiah Kubi, lawyer for Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (popularly known as Chairman Wontumi), to demonstrate humility and seek dialogue with the Attorney General to help resolve the current legal standoff involving his client.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem programme, Dr. Ansa-Asare appealed for calm and maturity in handling the matter, stressing that the public exchanges surrounding the case were casting Ghana in a negative light.
“The lawyers must be able to go to court and appeal for a revision of the bail conditions, and I know the judge will listen,” he said, urging the legal team to explore peaceful and lawful means to resolve the issue.
Dr. Ansa-Asare also advised Mr. Appiah Kubi to engage directly with Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine rather than pursue a confrontational path.
“He must go and talk to the Attorney General for this issue to be resolved. Dragging the matter with the government will not help,” he cautioned.
The former Ghana School of Law director expressed concern over reports that Chairman Wontumi and his team had vowed to remain in custody as a form of protest, describing the stance as “unhelpful” and “counterproductive.”
“They should not take an entrenched position like what I’m hearing, that they have vowed to sleep in the cells. It will not help anybody. They must prioritise the interest of the nation,” he added.
Dr. Ansa-Asare emphasised that the situation was attracting negative attention to Ghana and urged both parties to exercise restraint for the country’s image and stability.
“What is happening is giving Ghana bad press. Both parties must come together and work for the good of the nation,” he said.
He concluded by reminding Mr. Appiah Kubi to remain humble and prayerful in addressing the matter.
“Appiah Kubi must look up to God, be humble, and go and talk with the Attorney General. The important thing in this situation is humility,” he advised.
Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi remains in police custody despite meeting the ₵25 million bail granted by the Criminal Division of the High Court in two illegal mining-related cases. His legal team has attributed the delay in his release to administrative bottlenecks within state institutions.
