Former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has defended Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s response to recent events within the New Patriotic Party, insisting that the Vice President had every reason to feel aggrieved but chose restraint over anger.
Speaking on Lawson TV, Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said it was unreasonable for Dr. Bawumia to be insulted and immediately expected to participate in a peace pact without first addressing the wrongdoing.
According to him, the situation would naturally unsettle any human being.
“He was insulted and right after that, he was asked to come and sign a peace pact. He is human, and every human being would not feel happy with such a situation,” he stated.
He stressed that Dr. Bawumia did not react out of anger but rather sought accountability, particularly an apology from the individual involved.
Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained that the party’s attempt to shield the person responsible for the insult only worsened the situation, making it necessary for Dr. Bawumia to express his dissatisfaction.
“He was not angry. He was simply asking for an apology, but the party was trying to protect the person, and that would only encourage such behaviour to continue,” he noted.
He further clarified that even if Dr. Bawumia’s response was perceived by some as anger, it was justified under the circumstances.
“If anyone calls it anger, then it was righteous anger,” he added.
The former Majority Leader concluded that Dr. Bawumia handled the situation with maturity and restraint, despite being provoked, and that his actions should be understood within the broader context of fairness and internal party discipline.
