Former Majority Leader in Parliament and National Campaign Coordinator for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, has explained why Dr. Bawumia’s performance in the 2026 NPP presidential primaries was slightly lower than anticipated. Speaking on Angel FM, Kumasi, he noted that the intense competition from Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Bryan Acheampong played a key role.

“The heat of the contest between Bryan Acheampong, Kennedy Agyapong, and Dr. Bawumia was higher this time than in 2023. That is why the votes of Dr. Bawumia went down,” he said.

However, Mensah-Bonsu emphasized that the outcome remained overwhelmingly positive for Bawumia.

“It was not bad because when you check the spread of constituencies, Dr. Bawumia won many more constituencies this time than in 2023. This means that more constituencies have grown to understand him,” he added.

He also highlighted that even when combining the votes of all other candidates, Bawumia’s total remained unmatched.

“If you add all the other votes of the other candidates together, it will not reach that of Dr. Bawumia’s,” Mensah-Bonsu said.

The former majority leader attributed Bawumia’s strong performance to the support of the party executives.

“Most of the executives also support Bawumia, and that was why he got most of the votes,” he explained.
