Becoming First Female GHAMSU President Forced Me to Mature Early – Millicent Safo-Adu
Secretary to the Registrar, KNUST, Political Radio Show host, Producer EIB Network, Corporate MC, Mentor and Skill Trainer, Millicent Safo-Adu has described how her involvement in campus ministry helped her discover her leadership potential during her time at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
She first joined the Ghana Methodist Students’ Union, popularly known as GHAMSU, in SHS and later continued worshiping with them at KNUST, which she said played a key role in defining her goals and was also her place of peace because when coursework got difficult, that was where she found joy.
“I found joy at church whenever coursework became hectic”, she said.
Her curiosity about the university started in SHS where she became a GHAMSU executive and had the privilege to have discussions with the university students.
“The university students were helping us with the church at Kumasi Wesley Girls, and I started asking questions about the entry requirements for university, which helped me prepare for my next step,” she explained.
Upon her starting the university, she again decided to join GHAMSU and was later elected as a president.
Her involvement eventually led to her election as the first female president of the fellowship in KNUST.
“I even became the first female GHAMSU president, which forced me to mature early because of the challenges that came with it,” she said.
Despite the time demands of the role, she said her academic performance remained strong.
“My academics did not suffer from my immense engagement in the church activities. In fact, I was adding a grade point of two each semester and it was the grace of God, affirming that God blesses those who fervently do his work” she noted.
