The Acting Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, Samuel Adom Botchway, has cautioned the public against paying exorbitant fees for the acquisition of birth certificates, insisting that the official cost should not exceed ₵30.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Botchway described as “unacceptable” the growing reports of people being charged excessive amounts by middlemen and unauthorized agents for services that are meant to be affordable and accessible to all Ghanaians.

“The cost of acquiring a birth certificate shouldn’t exceed thirty cedis. That is the approved rate. Anyone charging above that is engaging in an illegality,” he stated firmly.

He warned that the Registry, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, will intensify efforts to clamp down on individuals exploiting the system for personal gain.

Mr. Botchway urged citizens to go through the official channels of the Births and Deaths Registry to ensure transparency and avoid being duped by unscrupulous intermediaries.

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to digitalizing birth and death records to make registration faster, safer, and corruption-free.

“We are modernizing our processes to make it easier for every Ghanaian to register births and deaths without stress or extra cost,” he added.

The statement comes amid rising public concern over inconsistent fees charged for birth certificates across different parts of the country.
