A devastating fire broke out at the girls’ hostel of the Zuarungu Nursing and Midwifery Training College on Monday, September 29, destroying students’ belongings and leaving parts of the facility badly damaged.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported that it received a distress call at 12:14 pm, prompting a swift response from two fire stations, Zuarungu and Bolgatanga. Firefighters arrived within three minutes to find the flames already raging.

Crews battled the blaze relentlessly and managed to bring it under control by 1:20 pm, with complete extinguishment achieved by 2:08 pm. Their timely intervention, according to GNFS, prevented the destruction from spreading further.

“Five rooms and students’ belongings were lost, but six others were salvaged, limiting the damage,” the Service confirmed in a statement on its official Facebook page.

Regional Fire Commander, Assistant Chief Fire Officer II Sagoe, visited the scene to assess the extent of the destruction. He assured school authorities that GNFS would conduct a full investigation to determine the cause of the fire and strengthen safety measures to avert future incidents.

While the exact cause of the blaze is yet to be established, GNFS has urged the public, especially schools and other institutions, to strictly observe fire safety protocols to reduce the risk of similar tragedies.
