Boeing has reached settlements in three lawsuits filed by the families of victims who died in the March 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX crash, attorneys representing the families announced on Wednesday.
The agreements mark another step in resolving the numerous legal actions stemming from the twin tragedies that involved Boeing’s 737 MAX aircraft.
Boeing did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 disaster occurred just five months after Lion Air Flight 610, another 737 MAX, crashed into the Java Sea. Investigations revealed that a malfunction in the automated flight control system contributed to both crashes, which together claimed 346 lives.
According to company disclosures cited by Reuters, Boeing has settled more than 90% of the civil lawsuits related to the two accidents, paying billions of dollars in compensation through lawsuits, deferred prosecution agreements, and other settlements.
The three victims in the latest settlements, Mercy Ngami Ndivo, Abdul Jalil Qaid Ghazi Hussein, and Nasrudin Mohammed, all had ties to Kenya, one of the countries hardest hit by the 2019 crash.
