A local sanitation group, the BuzStopBoys, has put forward a novel but low-cost idea to address the perennial problem of drains and waterways being choked with solid waste in Ghana’s urban areas. They suggest that drainage nets be installed at strategic points along drainage systems to catch floating waste before it enters rivers and streams and causes pollution or flood blockages.
Drains, gutters, and watercourses across Accra and other cities are often blocked with plastics, organic waste, and other debris. These blockages reduce water flow, worsen flooding during heavy rains, and lead to pollution of waterways. The Buz Stop Boys already spend several days each week desilting drains and clearing choked gutters. Although their clean-ups help, the problem recurs quickly.
What They’re Suggesting
- Install nets or mesh filters at or near drain inlets to catch floating or flowing waste before it enters major drains or waterways.
- Place them in sites known to accumulate large volumes of trash (e.g., at under-bridges, steep drain slopes, or where waste tends to enter from informal dumping).
- Regularly clean and maintain these nets, ensuring collected waste is removed promptly.
- Combine this with public education so residents know not to dump waste into drains.
According to the Buz Stop Boys, implementing drainage nets could result in:
- Reduced flooding since drains will be less quickly clogged by debris.
- Cleaner watercourses, less pollution, better public health outcomes.
- Less burden on clean-up crews who now have to remove the waste downstream.
- Raising awareness and changing behaviour regarding littering and waste disposal.
So far, the group has gained attention and support from citizens, local authorities, and organisations. The Minister of Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, praised their work in desilting drains and donated GHC 10,000. Zoomlion Ghana Ltd. has also supported their clean-ups with equipment and logistics.
Authorities (such as city and district assemblies) could consider this idea for pilot implementation. Waste management agencies might need to collaborate with community groups like Buz Stop Boys to identify the best locations, provide materials, and set up maintenance schedules.
