Bibiani GoldStars’ fairy-tale debut in the CAF Champions League got off to a rocky start after they suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Algeria’s JS Kabylie in the first leg of their preliminary round clash on Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The visitors showed their pedigree from the onset. Striker Aymen Mahious had the ball in the net as early as the eighth minute, but the flag went up for offside. Kabylie kept pressing and deservedly grabbed the opener in the 21st minute, with Medhi Merghem firing past the GoldStars goalkeeper.

After the break, the Ghanaian champions looked sharper and created chances but wastefulness in front of goal cost them dearly. Their woes deepened in the 70th minute when Babacar Sarr rose highest from a corner to head in the second, silencing the home crowd.

GoldStars now face a massive mountain to climb in the return leg in Algiers next week, where only a near-perfect performance will keep their continental dream alive.

The winner of this tie progresses to face either East End Lions (Sierra Leone) or US Monastir (Tunisia) in the next round.
