The youth of Cape Coast have been encouraged to look beyond classroom education and embrace technical and vocational training as a pathway to meaningful employment and self-sufficiency.
This call came from Kiki Bruce, Director of Springs for Skills College, during the institution’s first graduation ceremony in Cape Coast, which saw eighty-four trainees complete various hands-on programmes.
Madam Bruce urged young people in the Central Region to take advantage of the government’s Free Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative, describing it as an open door for anyone seeking to build a future anchored on skills rather than dependence.
“The challenge facing our young people is not the absence of opportunities, but the unwillingness to learn a trade or develop practical expertise. TVET gives us that chance to rise above poverty,” she said.
She added that poverty in Cape Coast and other parts of the region could be drastically reduced if more young people embraced skill acquisition rather than waiting for unavailable white-collar jobs.
Commending the government’s free TVET policy, Madam Bruce noted that the programme has already begun to reshape mindsets and restore dignity to technical work, giving young Ghanaians a reason to take pride in craftsmanship and innovation.
The Principal of Asuansi Technical Institute, who also addressed the gathering, echoed similar sentiments. He highlighted the importance of technical education in driving national development, noting that countries that have prioritised skills training continue to enjoy lower unemployment rates and stronger economies.
“It does not matter your background or the level of education you have attained. What matters is your readiness to learn and apply what you learn. Skill is power,” he said.
The graduation ceremony was both a celebration of achievement and a reminder of possibility — a moment that underscored how education through skills can break the cycle of joblessness and dependency.
