Chelsea’s 21-year-old defensive midfielder Romeo Lavia remains eligible to represent Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, despite having made just one senior appearance for Belgium.
Lavia, who joined Chelsea from Southampton in 2023, has Ghanaian heritage through his father, making him eligible to switch international allegiance under FIFA’s nationality rules.
According to the regulations, a player who has made fewer than three senior competitive appearances for one national team before turning 21 can still change national associations if they meet the eligibility criteria, in this case, parentage.
The young midfielder, widely regarded for his composure, ball control, and tactical intelligence, has already drawn comparisons with Ghana’s midfield maestro Thomas Partey. Football analysts suggest that Lavia could be a natural successor to Partey, whose leadership and experience have anchored Ghana’s midfield for nearly a decade.
Sports commentators have noted growing interest among Ghanaian fans, with many calling on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to intensify efforts to convince Lavia to represent the Black Stars.
Should the Chelsea star decide to play for Ghana, his inclusion could significantly strengthen the national team’s midfield options ahead of future continental and World Cup campaigns.
Lavia, born in Brussels to a Ghanaian father and Congolese mother, has yet to make a final decision about his international future. However, sources close to the player say he remains open to discussions, a development that could rekindle hopes of seeing another Premier League talent don the Ghanaian colours.
