The Appointments Committee of Parliament will today, Monday, November 10, 2025, vet Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, who has been nominated by President John Dramani Mahama as the next Chief Justice of Ghana.
According to an official notice issued by David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations at Parliament, the vetting is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. in Parliament House.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination follows the dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who had served as Chief Justice since 2023.
During the vetting, members of the Appointments Committee are expected to examine the nominee’s judicial record, professional ethics, and proposed reforms for the administration of justice in Ghana. The committee’s report and recommendations will later be presented to the full House for approval.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has rejected a motion filed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, seeking to suspend the vetting process until court proceedings involving the former Chief Justice are concluded.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin had argued that proceeding with the vetting could compromise ongoing judicial matters and raise constitutional concerns. However, Speaker Bagbin ruled that there was no legal or procedural basis to halt Parliament’s constitutional functions, warning that such an action could set a dangerous precedent and threaten the independence of the legislature.
Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie currently serves as a Justice of the Supreme Court and is widely respected for his expertise in constitutional and criminal law.
