The Municipal Director of Education for Nkwanta South, Jonathan Korsinah, has raised alarm over a growing number of newly placed Senior High School (SHS) students refusing to take up admissions in schools within the municipality due to ongoing violent conflicts in the area.
According to Mr. Korsinah, the situation has led to a sharp drop in enrolment figures across several schools, as both students and parents fear for their safety.
At Nkwanta South SHS, for instance, only 25 out of 41 students who were placed online showed interest in registering, with 24 eventually completing their admission. The Nkwanta Community Day Senior High Technical School, which received 190 placements, recorded a mere 22 registrations, including 22 protocol admissions.
The situation is similar in other schools: Ntruboman SHS registered just 26 students, while Kyabobo Girls SHS has only 16 registered students as of last week.
In an interview with Adom News, Mr. Korsinah attributed the low registration numbers to the fear and uncertainty caused by renewed hostilities in Nkwanta South. He appealed to parents and students to remain calm and take advantage of the education opportunities available, assuring them that government and security agencies have intensified efforts to safeguard lives and property.
“The security is here to protect you. We are doing everything possible to ensure that schools operate in a safe and peaceful environment,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Oti Regional Minister, Hon. John Gyapong Kwadwo, expressed deep concern about the recent surge in attacks and killings in parts of the municipality. He indicated that while there are plans to review existing curfew hours, the volatile nature of the situation makes it risky to ease restrictions at the moment.
“Each time we attempt to relax the curfew, violence flares up again. We need the full cooperation of residents to restore calm,” he stressed.
The minister urged residents to consider the long-term effects of the conflict on education, local businesses, and development projects in the municipality, calling for unity and peaceful coexistence to allow normal life to resume.
