Director of Communications for the United Party, Solomon Owusu, says the removal of the COVID-19 levy was necessary and long overdue, arguing that the tax had no justification once the pandemic ended.
Speaking on TV3’s Keypoint on November 29, 2025, Mr. Owusu said high taxes place heavy pressure on businesses, increase the cost of goods, reduce consumer demand, and ultimately force many enterprises to shut down. He therefore reiterated his support for low-tax policies as a way to keep the private sector alive and competitive.
“The COVID-19 levy was introduced to address the pandemic. Now that COVID-19 is no longer an emergency, the levy had no business remaining in our tax system,” he stated.
He accused government of imposing unnecessary taxes to compensate for revenue lost through corruption. According to him, Ghana reportedly lost GH¢81 billion to corruption, while the COVID-19 levy generated only GH¢10.2 billion, making any comparison between the two meaningless.
“What government must do is tighten the systems that allow corruption to thrive. If we can block leakages and stop these losses, there will be no need for taxes like the COVID-19 levy,” he argued.
Mr. Owusu added that excessive taxes restrict private-sector growth and create conditions that fuel corruption, calling for a renewed national focus on tackling the problem at its roots.
“We must confront corruption head-on. That is where the real solution lies,” he stressed.
