COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Since it first emerged, the virus has spread globally, affecting millions of people. The disease primarily targets the respiratory system but can also affect other organs, leading to a wide range of symptoms and complications.

The virus spreads mainly through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, or breathes. It can also be transmitted by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the face, especially the eyes, nose, or mouth. Crowded and enclosed spaces increase the likelihood of transmission.

Symptoms of COVID-19 vary widely and may appear 2–14 days after exposure. Common signs include fever, dry cough, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, and shortness of breath. Some people may experience mild symptoms, while others develop severe illness requiring hospitalization. High-risk individuals, such as older adults and those with underlying health conditions, are more likely to experience complications, including pneumonia, organ failure, or death.

Preventing COVID-19 relies on a combination of vaccination, hygiene, and public health practices. Vaccines help reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalizations. Regular handwashing, wearing masks in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals are effective ways to limit the spread of the virus. Maintaining proper ventilation indoors and following public health guidelines also play a crucial role in prevention.

Early testing and medical care are important for managing COVID-19. Infected individuals are advised to isolate to prevent transmission to others, monitor symptoms, and seek medical attention if conditions worsen. Treatments focus on supportive care, managing symptoms, and in severe cases, hospital interventions such as oxygen therapy.

COVID-19 continues to impact communities worldwide, but adherence to preventive measures, vaccination campaigns, and public awareness can significantly reduce the spread and severity of the disease. Everyone is encouraged to stay informed, practice safety measures, and participate in vaccination programs to protect themselves and those around them.
