Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, 24, has tragically passed away from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot, authorities confirmed Thursday morning.

The Cowboys released a statement expressing deep sorrow, noting Kneeland was “a beloved teammate and member of our organization.” The team extended thoughts and prayers to his girlfriend, Catalina, and his family, while making counseling resources available to all players, coaches, and staff.

According to the Frisco Police Department, the incident followed a vehicle pursuit in the city on Wednesday night. Kneeland’s vehicle was found crashed, after which he fled on foot. A group text reportedly sent by Kneeland saying goodbye raised concerns among those who knew him. Hours later, he was located with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Kneeland’s agent, Jonathan Perzley, described the loss as “a pain I can hardly put into words,” highlighting the young player’s journey from Western Michigan to the NFL and the dedication he displayed on the field.

“To lose someone with his talent, spirit, and goodness is a pain I can hardly put into words. My heart aches for his family, his teammates, and everyone who loved him,” Perzley said.

The NFL also expressed deep sadness and confirmed it had offered support and counseling resources to the Cowboys.

Western Michigan coach Lance Taylor remembered Kneeland as “so much more than an incredible football player,” praising his leadership, energy, and lasting impact on the program.

Kneeland was the Cowboys’ second-round pick in 2024 (No. 56 overall). Despite injuries that caused him to miss multiple games, he had already made notable contributions, including scoring the team’s first touchdown in a recent game against the Arizona Cardinals by recovering a blocked punt.

Former Cowboys assistant Greg Ellis, who coached Kneeland last year, described him as dedicated, eager to learn, and a player who exemplified discipline and commitment on and off the field. Kneeland’s playing style had even drawn comparisons to Ellis’s own during his NFL career.

Kneeland excelled in high school and college football, setting records at Godwin Heights High School and compiling impressive statistics at Western Michigan, earning second-team All-Mid-American Conference honors in 2023.

The Cowboys organization has previously faced in-season tragedies, including the deaths of linebacker Jerry Brown in 2012 and strength coach Markus Paul in 2020, making Kneeland’s death a painful reminder of the fragility of life.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident, while the football community mourns the loss of a promising young athlete.
