The Paramount Chief of the Damongo Traditional Area in the Savannah Region has announced a ban on the sale of khebab, a popular delicacy made from grilled meat, as part of measures to tackle the growing menace of livestock theft in the area.
According to the chief, the decision was taken after consultations with community elders and security stakeholders, following reports that stolen goats and cattle were often slaughtered and disguised as khebab for quick sale.
He explained that the ban is a temporary but necessary measure to protect livestock owners, restore order, and discourage criminals who exploit the khebab trade to conceal their illegal activities.
Residents have expressed mixed reactions to the directive. While some believe it will help reduce livestock theft, others argue that it unfairly affects genuine traders who depend on the khebab business for survival.
Community leaders, however, are urging cooperation, stressing that the ban is in the best interest of the people and will be reviewed once the situation improves.
Security operatives in Damongo have also pledged to intensify patrols and investigations to deal with the broader issue of animal theft in the municipality.
