The mother of an eight-year-old girl who died in Wednesday’s Dansoman market fire has spoken publicly for the first time, describing the difficult moments that preceded the tragedy.

The victim, Priscilla, was at home earlier in the afternoon when she told her mother she was hungry. With no adult around to supervise her and worried about safety in the neighbourhood, her mother briefly locked the room and stepped out to buy food.

Shortly after arriving at the market, she heard urgent calls that a nearby stretch of houses was on fire. She rushed back to find the area engulfed in flames, with rescuers unable to reach the structure where her daughter had been.

Emergency personnel eventually accessed the burnt section of the compound and confirmed that the young girl had not survived. Her body was later moved to the morgue.

The fire ravaged several wooden structures and metal containers, keeping firefighters on the ground for hours as they worked to bring the situation under control.

The incident drew the attention of senior officers of the Ghana National Fire Service and the MP for Ablekuma West, who visited the scene. Authorities expressed concern over the level of crowd interference during the operation and urged the public to cooperate more fully during emergency responses.

Fire investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the blaze.
