A Senior Lecturer at the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), Dr. Aaron Kumah has advised young people to shift their focus from the early pursuit of money to deliberate personal development, describing youth as a critical period for building capacity for the future.
Addressing the youth on Oyerepa Radio, Dr. Kumah encouraged them to broaden their mindset and recognise the importance of making meaningful use of their formative years. He explained that the period roughly between the ages of 14 and 21 should not be dominated by the quest for wealth but rather by intentional growth and skill acquisition.
“I want the youth to add to their thinking that, because they are young, they must make the most out of life,” he said.
According to him, young people who are learning a trade should commit themselves fully to mastering it, while those in school should approach their studies with seriousness and discipline. He stressed that whatever path a young person chooses, excellence and consistency are key to future success.
“This is not the time for chasing money; it is a time for development. Whatever you are doing now, do it well so that in the years ahead, things will go well for you,” Dr. Kumah stated.
He further reflected on the popular saying that life begins at forty, explaining that it is often at that stage that people become more conscious of time, purpose, and mortality.
“We say life begins at forty because that is when people begin to think seriously about death and the meaning of life,” he noted.
Dr. Kumah also appealed to young people to remain focused on their goals and to work patiently towards achieving them. In addition, he called on parents to play a more active role in the lives of their children by guiding, monitoring, and supporting them.
“I plead with parents to interact more with their children and help them realise their potential,” he said.
He concluded that sustained parental involvement and youth development are essential to preserving the social fabric needed to raise responsible and capable future generations.
