Former Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has stated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has no intention of influencing elections at the polling station, constituency, or national executive levels of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking in an interview, the former Majority Leader stressed that Dr. Bawumia sees himself as a unifying figure within the party and remains committed to neutrality in all internal contests.

“Dr. Bawumia is a representative for all, and he has no intention of influencing any elections,” he said. “He is not endorsing anybody. He has not endorsed anybody and will never do that.”

According to Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, claims that Dr. Bawumia is backing particular candidates in ongoing or upcoming internal party elections are unfounded.

He further explained that at the polling station level, there is often little or no competition because positions are usually filled through consensus rather than contested elections.

“In many polling station areas, there is barely any competition,” he noted. “They normally build consensus on who should keep the position.”

He added that some party executives, particularly youth and women organisers, have occupied their positions for extended periods, sometimes as long as 25 years, due to this consensus-based approach.

While acknowledging that competition may be more evident at higher levels of party organisation, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu maintained that Dr. Bawumia remains completely neutral regardless.

“Even in those cases, Dr. Bawumia is not supporting any candidate,” he stressed. “He is neutral.”

He concluded by reiterating that Dr. Bawumia’s focus is on party unity and inclusiveness rather than influencing internal power structures.
