A political analyst, Prof. Lawrence Lowell, has expressed strong doubts about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s ability to become president of Ghana, citing internal party attacks, weak messaging, and unfavourable political conditions.
Speaking on Oyerepa TV, Prof. Lowell stated that it would be extremely difficult for Dr. Bawumia to win the presidency because he lacks a convincing message that resonates with Ghanaians. According to him, Dr. Bawumia also appears to have little political leverage to deploy against the NDC, making his campaign strategy unclear and ineffective.
Prof. Lowell was particularly concerned about the internal challenges confronting the Vice President. He argued that accusations branding Dr. Bawumia as a liar would not have been a major issue if they had come from political opponents outside the New Patriotic Party (NPP). However, he described it as deeply damaging that such declarations are coming from within the party itself. He questioned how party members who have publicly portrayed Dr. Bawumia as dishonest could later turn around to campaign and ask Ghanaians to vote for him.
“I can’t even see how they will be doing the campaign,” Prof. Lowell remarked, emphasizing that the credibility crisis created by internal criticism severely undermines any serious electoral effort.
In his assessment of the current political climate, Prof. Lowell said that if elections were to be held now, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would win power.
“The NPP tends to return to government only when the NDC has plunged the country into severe crisis and voters are searching for a political rescue. In his view, that situation does not exist at the moment, “he explained.
According to Prof. Lowell, the NDC is currently performing well, making it difficult for the NPP to build a strong rescue narrative. As a result, he believes Dr. Bawumia will face significant resistance both from within his own party and from the wider electorate.
He concluded that with internal opposition, credibility issues, and an unfavourable political environment, Dr. Bawumia’s path to becoming president of Ghana remains extremely challenging.
