Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah has raised concerns over illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey, taking place behind the Castle Block dormitory at Akrokerri College of Education. Speaking on Okay FM, he warned that the activities could cause severe structural damage to the building.

“This galamsey is going on behind one of the boys’ dormitories. If we don’t take care, that building will collapse,” Dr. Otchere-Ankrah said. “Must our greediness take us this far?”

He lamented the broader destruction caused by galamsey, noting that many lands have already been ruined and now even residents and educational institutions are at risk. “I am sad and feel very terrible about it,” he added.

The teacher highlighted the importance of the dormitory, which has accommodated some of the country’s best educators over the years. “We have gotten so much benefit from that school. Are we going to watch that school be destroyed by galamsey?” he asked.

Dr. Otchere-Ankrah also questioned the effectiveness of local authorities and security agencies. “Has the district police commander not heard about this? Have the officers in charge of galamsey, including the regional minister, coordinating director, and chiefs, not heard about this?”

He described the situation as a betrayal of the legacy of previous generations. “They want to destroy a project that our ancestors struggled to build for their people. This is so shameful,” he said.
