Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has urged Ghanaians to shift their focus from the pomp and pageantry of weddings to the serious work marriage demands. She made the remarks during the latest episode of Talk No Dey Cook Rice, JoyNews’ podcast.

According to Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, society often places undue emphasis on the build-up to the wedding, from “Save the Date” announcements and elaborate photo shoots to satisfying family and societal expectations, while under-preparing for what comes after: sharing a home, handling conflicts, and sustaining a relationship.

“People automatically think that when you get married, everything is automatically okay, a lovely fairy tale, but it’s not always true,” she said. She encouraged couples to be honest about who they are from the beginning, so that surprises don’t cause strain later on.

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings emphasized that marriage is comparable to a contract or partnership, not something that can be left to run itself. Communication, she said, is essential, couples must learn to express themselves in ways their partner understands. She also stressed the need for clear agreements on financial matters and division of household chores.

While acknowledging that these preparations and commitments don’t guarantee success, she urged couples to build on shared values and mutual understanding to better withstand the inevitable challenges of married life.

Implications & Reactions
Her comments may inspire deeper public reflection in Ghana, where weddings are often large social events with considerable financial and cultural weight. Observers say that her counsel comes at a time when many couples are grappling with post-marital stress and where divorce and separation are rising concerns.
