The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced its highest-ever monthly revenue collection of GH₵1.74 billion in July 2025, describing the milestone as evidence of progress in its drive to reduce losses and improve operational efficiency.

Appearing before Parliament’s Energy Committee, acting Managing Director, Engineer Julius Kpekpena, said the achievement reflects new measures being rolled out to strengthen internal processes and close revenue gaps.

“This year, July, we had our highest ever revenue in the ECG collector, GH₵1.74 billion. It’s a record, and we want to celebrate that,” he said.

Kpekpena noted that ECG is also working to enhance customer experience by addressing frustrations around power supply and meter acquisition. “We know we have some issues in some of the districts and regions, and we are working to resolve those. But internally, we are making progress,” he assured.

Responding to public concerns over the company’s request for a 220% increase in distribution service charges, the acting MD clarified that the proposal does not translate into higher tariffs for consumers.

“ECG has asked for a certain percentage increase in the distribution service charge, not in how much customers will pay us. ECG is not asking that customers’ tariff should be increased by 220%, absolutely not. What we are asking for can even be done without any corresponding increase in the end-user tariff,” he explained.

According to Kpekpena, the current tariff structure is “distorted” against distribution, with ECG receiving only 12% of the tariff component instead of the expected 40%. He appealed to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to correct the imbalance.

“We are appealing to the PURC to correct that distortion. So the distribution service charge can go up without necessarily increasing the end-user tariff,” he added.

The ECG has faced sustained public criticism over service quality, billing challenges, and revenue leakages. However, the company maintains that the July revenue record is a sign that reforms are beginning to yield results.
