The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, as the sub-region’s sole candidate for the Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) when the rotational leadership reaches West Africa’s turn in 2027.

The endorsement was confirmed in Abuja on December 12, 2025, during the Ninety-Fifth Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers. The decision is contained in Recommendation C/REC.1/12/25, which calls on all Member States to adopt a unified position in support of Ghana’s candidature.

The Council noted Ghana’s longstanding contributions to ECOWAS, its regional leadership record, and the need to advance the visibility and influence of West African states within continental and global institutions.

It further emphasized the importance of coordinated support to ensure that ECOWAS nationals continue to occupy strategic positions in international organisations, including the African Union.

The Authority of Heads of State and Government is expected to adopt the declaration of support at its meeting on Sunday.

The endorsement sets the stage for a consolidated ECOWAS campaign ahead of the 2027 AU leadership election.
