Government has unveiled a new incentive scheme aimed at attracting teachers to rural and underserved parts of the country, offering a 20 per cent salary enhancement to those who accept postings in such areas.
The announcement was made by Deputy Minister for Education, Clement Apaak, during a meeting with outstanding candidates of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). He used the occasion to reiterate the administration’s resolve to address disparities within Ghana’s education system.
According to him, the financial incentive forms part of the Teacher Dabre Programme, an initiative structured to motivate educators to serve in communities that traditionally struggle to attract qualified personnel. Beyond the salary increment, teachers who sign onto the scheme will also benefit from accommodation assistance to ease the burden associated with postings to remote locations.
Dr. Apaak explained that combining a salary top-up with housing support is expected to improve teacher retention in deprived areas and strengthen learning outcomes at the foundational level of education.
He further indicated that the policy direction was originally outlined by John Dramani Mahama during his State of the Nation Address, underscoring the government’s broader strategy to close the gap between urban and rural educational opportunities.
The Deputy Minister emphasized that the overarching goal of the programme is to ensure that children in less advantaged communities receive the same quality of instruction and opportunity as their counterparts in more developed areas.
