The Effutu Municipality on Friday, December 5, 2025, came alive with celebration, pride, and gratitude as farmers, fisher-folks, agribusinesses, and community members gathered at the Ansaful Community Centre for the 2025 Municipal Farmers’ Day Celebration.

The colourful event paid homage to the men and women whose labour sustains the area’s food supply, and at the heart of the celebrations stood 35-year-old seasoned farmer, Joseph Turkson, adjudged the Overall Best Farmer for Effutu Municipality.

With 15 years of dedicated farming experience under his belt, Joseph Turkson’s recognition was met with thunderous applause from his colleagues and dignitaries present. As part of his prize package, he received a tricycle, Wellington boots, knapsack sprayers, and assorted farming tools to support and expand his operations.

Representing the Member of Parliament for Effutu and Minority Leader of Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, former Municipal Chief Executive Alhaji Zubairu Kassim underscored the need for Ghanaians to consciously patronize locally produced foods. He emphasized that choosing local foods not only strengthens the economy but also empowers farmers who form the backbone of the nation’s food system.

“Our farmers need our support. When we eat what we grow, we grow the economy,” he remarked, drawing nods of agreement from the audience.

Delivering the keynote address, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Rev. Atta Mensah, spoke passionately on this year’s theme: Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future.”

According to him, the theme reflects a national agenda focused on self-sufficiency, sustainability, and resilience within the agricultural sector.

He noted that food security is a shared responsibility, one that requires collective action from producers, consumers, and policymakers.

“The theme highlights Government’s commitment to ensuring a secure and sustainable agricultural future,” he said. “It underscores the importance of not only producing food but consuming what we produce.”

Rev. Atta Mensah further explained that Ghana remains dedicated to achieving self-reliance in food production, citing major government policies such as the Feed Ghana Programme and the 24-Hour Economy Policy. These initiatives, he said, aim to stimulate productivity, promote value addition, and create long-term employment opportunities for the youth.

Hon. Rev. Mensah praised the administration of President John Dramani Mahama for reinforcing the enabling environment needed for the private sector to thrive, particularly within the agricultural value chain. He highlighted the importance of strengthening the link between primary agricultural production and agro-processing industries to generate jobs and foster inclusive economic growth.

“It is through strong value chains that we can guarantee prosperity for our farmers and ensure that agriculture remains a pillar of national development,” he emphasized.

The 2025 Farmers’ Day celebration in Effutu which saw 19 categories of Awards given to deserving farmers and fisher-folks was more than an award ceremony. It was a testament to the dedication, resilience, and impact of farmers like Joseph Turkson, whose daily sacrifices ensure food security for communities across the municipality and beyond.

As music, cultural displays, and applause filled the Ansaful Community Centre, one message resonated clearly: Effutu’s future is rooted in the hard work of its farmers and the community stands united in honouring and supporting them.
