The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Effutu Municipal Assembly, Hon. Rev. Atta Mensah, has intensified his grassroots engagement drive with a community forum in Atekyedo, where residents presented a broad slate of infrastructure and social development concerns.

The meeting, held on Friday, February 20, 2026 in the farming community on the outskirts of Winneba, drew traditional authorities, opinion leaders, youth representatives and residents, underscoring the Assembly’s renewed push to strengthen participatory local governance.

Welcoming the delegation, the Chief of Atekyedo, Neenyi Oprohn Ekwam I, praised the MCE for what he described as “leadership that listens.” He commended the Assembly’s ongoing efforts across the municipality and urged residents to engage constructively to ensure tangible outcomes.

Speaking on behalf of the community, Nana Amponsah Mensah outlined pressing challenges that residents say have constrained economic activity and public services for years.

MCE RESPONDING TO ISSUES

Foremost among them is the deteriorating access road linking Atekyedo to major routes within the municipality. According to community leaders, damaged bridges and the absence of culverts have rendered sections of the road nearly impassable during the rainy season, affecting the transport of farm produce and limiting access to healthcare and markets. Residents are calling for urgent rehabilitation works, including the provision of laterite to stabilize the road network.

Flooding from the nearby River Ayensu has compounded the community’s vulnerability. During heavy rains, the river frequently overflows its banks, submerging farmlands and damaging homes. Community representatives appealed for dredging and desilting interventions to restore the river’s flow capacity and prevent recurrent destruction.

Development concerns also extend to incomplete public projects. Residents cited the stalled construction of a local market and an unfinished toilet facility as symbols of halted progress. They further appealed for teacher accommodation to attract and retain qualified staff, noting that inadequate housing continues to affect educational delivery.

Security concerns were raised following the recent theft of an electric transformer serving the local school,  an incident that temporarily disrupted academic activities. Community leaders are requesting security personnel to safeguard public infrastructure.

Health and digital access were also high on the agenda. Residents called for additional medical supplies to support the local clinic and computers for the school library to enhance digital literacy among students.

Neenyi Oprohn Ekwam I emphasized the urgency of technological inclusion, stating that “the future belongs to communities that equip their children with digital skills.” He stressed that access to computers is no longer a luxury but a prerequisite for competitiveness in a technology-driven global economy.

In response, Hon. Rev. Atta Mensah assured residents of the Assembly’s commitment to addressing the concerns raised. He announced plans to facilitate free registration onto the National Health Insurance Scheme for residents without valid membership, a move aimed at expanding access to healthcare services.

The MCE also pledged to initiate steps toward dredging the River Ayensu to mitigate flooding risks and improve environmental resilience in the area. He reiterated the Assembly’s broader development agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic empowerment.

Encouraging residents to leverage agriculture as a pathway to prosperity, he described farming as a cornerstone of local economic transformation and called for stronger collaboration between the Assembly and community stakeholders.

The Atekyedo engagement forms part of a wider consultative tour across communities in the Effutu Municipality, reflecting an administrative strategy focused on direct dialogue and citizen participation.

By the close of the meeting, both Assembly officials and community leaders expressed renewed commitment to partnership, transparency and accountability in advancing development priorities.

For residents of Atekyedo, the forum marked more than a routine visit; it signaled an opportunity to transform long-standing challenges into actionable plans through sustained collaboration with local authorities.
