The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Effutu Hon. Rev. Kofi Atta Mensah, together with key management members of the Effutu Municipal Assembly, on Saturday embarked on an inspection tour of the Winneba Central Market following severe flooding caused by a heavy downpour on Friday morning, November 7, 2025.
The MCE’s visit aimed to assess the extent of damage and to engage directly with affected traders and market leaders.
During the tour, several traders recounted their losses, reporting that the floods had destroyed valuable goods and disrupted business activities.
Preliminary assessments revealed that the flooding was primarily due to blocked drains and culverts within and around the market. The situation has been compounded by indiscriminate dumping of refuse, which has hindered proper flow of stormwater.
Addressing the market women and the Assembly’s environmental officers, the MCE expressed concern over the recurring sanitation challenges in the area and called for immediate action to restore cleanliness and prevent future flooding.
“We cannot continue to allow poor sanitation practices to endanger livelihoods and the safety of traders,” the MCE said. “The Environmental Health Department must move swiftly to clear the drains and ensure that the law is applied to anyone who dumps refuse indiscriminately.”
He further charged the Environmental Health Office to intensify education and enforcement on proper waste management among traders to sustain cleanliness at the market.
Some traders appealed for support from the Assembly to help them recover from the losses and to provide long-term drainage solutions to prevent future occurrences.
The Effutu Municipal Assembly has assured the public of its commitment to addressing the sanitation and drainage challenges at the Winneba Central Market as part of broader efforts to promote a clean, safe, and resilient trading environment.
