As part of efforts to promote healthy living and improve environmental sanitation in the Effutu Municipality, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Rev. Atta Mensah, has announced the institution of a Monthly Market Sanitation Day across all markets in the municipality.
The initiative, which will be observed once every month, aims to ensure that the various markets, particularly the Winneba Central Market, are kept clean and safe for both traders and consumers.
Hon. Rev. Atta Mensah made the announcement when he led members of the Effutu Municipal Disaster Management Committee to visit the Winneba Central Market following last Friday’s (November 7, 2025) flood incident, which destroyed several properties and displaced traders.
During the visit, the MCE and his team assessed the extent of damage and engaged market women and traders on proper waste disposal and flood prevention measures.
He expressed concern about the indiscriminate dumping of refuse, which he said had contributed significantly to the flooding.
“We cannot continue to live and trade in filth. Every trader has a responsibility to keep their environment clean. The Market Sanitation Day will help us ensure that our markets are clean, safe, and conducive for business,” he stated.
He further cautioned traders to desist from dumping refuse into drains and open spaces, emphasizing that the collective participation of all stakeholders would be key to sustaining the cleanliness of the markets.
“This is a shared responsibility. We must all get involved to make Winneba a model for cleanliness and healthy living,” the MCE added.
The Municipal Disaster Management Committee used the opportunity to sensitize traders on good hygiene practices, emphasizing the link between a clean environment, healthy living, and the sale of wholesome food items to residents.
The new sanitation initiative is expected to complement existing municipal efforts to improve sanitation, prevent flooding, and enhance public health across Effutu.
