The Effutu Municipal Assembly has taken a significant step toward improving water access and sanitation in public basic schools with the official groundbreaking and handing-over ceremony for the drilling and mechanization of boreholes fitted with iron removal plants in four selected schools across the municipality.
The initiative, which forms part of the Assembly’s broader agenda to strengthen basic social infrastructure, will provide mechanized boreholes equipped with water treatment systems, overhead storage tanks and distribution points. The project is designed to ensure a reliable supply of safe and potable water, thereby enhancing hygiene, sanitation and the overall learning environment for pupils and staff.

The ceremonial exercise commenced at Saint John Anglican Primary B School at Abasraba, continued at Donbosco Basic School at Donkoryiem, proceeded to Methodist Primary School at Ndaamba, and concluded at Unipra South C Basic School at Domeabra-Otutuase.
Addressing pupils, teachers and community members at the various sites, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Effutu, Honourable Rev. Atta Mensah, reaffirmed the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to improving living and learning conditions within the municipality. He emphasized that access to clean water is not a luxury but a fundamental necessity, particularly in schools where good hygiene practices are critical to children’s health, attendance and academic performance.
“Safe water is essential to the wellbeing of our schoolchildren and staff,” the MCE stated. “As an Assembly, we will continue to prioritize interventions that directly impact education, public health and human development.”

In addition to the water projects, Hon. Rev. Atta Mensah announced that the Assembly will supply not less than 300 dual desks, together with teachers’ furniture, to each of the beneficiary schools and other basic schools within the municipality. This, he noted, is intended to ease the persistent challenge of inadequate classroom furniture and improve teaching and learning outcomes.
The MCE also appealed to school authorities and community stakeholders to safeguard the facilities once completed, stressing that proper maintenance is key to sustainability and long-term benefit. Turning his attention to the contractor, he urged the engagement of local artisans in the execution of the works to promote local participation and economic empowerment.
“Contractor, make sure you pick artisans from Winneba,” he emphasized.
The Municipal Director of Education, Madam Diana Anderson, praised the Assembly for what she described as a timely and impactful intervention. Quoting the popular saying “water is life,” she noted that access to clean water in schools will significantly improve sanitation, reduce health-related absenteeism and support effective teaching and learning. She assured all stakeholders of the Education Directorate’s commitment to ensuring the proper use and maintenance of the facilities.
When completed, the borehole and water treatment projects are expected to substantially reduce water-related challenges in the beneficiary schools, promote better hygiene practices, and create a healthier, more conducive environment for learning, marking another milestone in the Effutu Municipal Assembly’s drive toward inclusive and sustainable development.
