The Ashanti Regional Manager of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Edward Boduah, has clarified that electricity meters in Ghana are not for sale, stressing that consumers are only required to pay for service connection.

Speaking on Angel FM Kumasi, Mr. Boduah explained that all meters remain the property of the state, with the Electricity Company of Ghana responsible for their distribution and management.

“The meters are not for sale; they belong to the state and are vested in ECG, which supervises their acquisition and installation,” he stated.

He emphasized that consumers are not expected to purchase meters outright but only pay approved charges for connection services. According to him, even in cases where a meter becomes faulty, ECG is mandated to replace it at no additional cost to the consumer.

“You only pay for the service connection. If a meter becomes faulty, ECG is supposed to replace it free of charge,” he noted.

Mr. Boduah also cautioned the public against engaging in illegal or unapproved processes, including what he described as “political meters,” urging those who have applied for meters but are yet to receive them to report directly to PURC for redress.

While acknowledging challenges such as distribution and customer-related losses within the system, he warned against dealing with unauthorized individuals who demand inflated fees for meter installation.

“We are aware that some people charge high amounts to install meters, but any legitimate payment must be made through ECG and be accompanied by an official receipt,” he stressed.

He advised consumers to be vigilant, noting that any payment made without proper documentation is likely illegitimate.
