The Ashanti Regional Head of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Mr. Nathaniel Nana Kwabena Nkrumah, has cautioned the public against excessive salt consumption, warning that high intake significantly increases the risk of heart-related health problems.

Speaking on Angel FM in Kumasi, Mr. Nkrumah explained that salt is chemically known as sodium chloride, and elevated sodium levels in the body can contribute to cardiovascular complications.

“Salt is sodium chloride, and an increase in its intake raises one’s chances of developing heart problems,” he stated.

He particularly advised individuals who already suffer from heart conditions or hypertension to carefully monitor and regulate their salt consumption.

“We advise those who already have such conditions to manage the way they consume salt,” he said.

According to him, while many people have a strong preference for salty foods, excessive consumption poses serious health risks and should be moderated.

“People really like salt, but it does not help,” he noted. “We must know how to manage our salt intake.”

Mr. Nkrumah added that the FDA sets regulatory limits for sodium content in certain food products, but public cooperation remains essential.

“The FDA has limits in place, so the best we can do is to advise the public on responsible consumption,” he explained.

He concluded by urging residents of the Ashanti Region and the general public to adopt healthier dietary habits to reduce preventable heart-related illnesses.
