Ghanaian rapper Ayigbe Edem has expressed concern about the growing influence of fanbases in Ghana’s music industry, stating that organized fan groups sometimes control narratives in ways that prevent fans from thinking critically about issues within the creative space.
Speaking on Angel FM in Kumasi, Edem noted that although fanbases can help promote artistes and their music, they can also create division and distort realities in the industry.
“Fanbases in Ghana are controlled and sometimes they don’t allow fans to think critically on most issues,” he said.
Edem explained that while awards remain an important recognition for musicians, they should not be the ultimate goal when creating music. According to him, longevity and consistency in the industry are far more important than chasing accolades.
“Usually the goal is not the awards when creating, even though they are important honour for you,” he stated. “It is also a mirage that if you chase you will lose your career, because the best way to go is to be consistent and relevant over a longer period of time.”
He added that awards and recognitions should rather serve as motivation after an artiste has already established consistency in their craft.
“Once you are doing that and the accolades come, then it boosts you to do more,” he explained.
Edem further acknowledged that while fanbases play a useful role in supporting artistes, they have also contributed to growing divisions within the industry.
“Fanbases are good, but it has also brought about disunity and cracks in the space,” he said, noting that the music industry is naturally competitive and individuals often adopt strategies that work best for them.
According to the rapper, one of the major problems created by organized fanbases is the illusion they sometimes build around certain narratives.
“This fanbase culture has also created a mirage that prevents fans from seeing beyond it,” he noted.
He pointed out that some supporters often create images, hype, and online momentum that do not always reflect the true situation on the ground within the music industry.
